It was recently announced that married soldiers may now live together in the same housing in Iraq. This is an about-face (a 180 degree turn for you civilians out there) of previously accepted Army policy.
This is seen as an attempt to boost morale and maintain the marriages of couples serving in the military.
This is a double-edged sword. It improves the morale of those soldiers fortunate enough to have a spouse serving at the same base overseas. This also however could decrease the morale of soldiers who are not allowed such an opportunity.
Also this could lead to pregnancies that would send those women home from a warzone, further hurting the manpower capabilities of units serving overseas. I doubt that the army is mandating that all those couples use some form of contraceptive to solve this.
Anyway, thought it was an interesting article. We’ll see how many soldiers get married just so they can get some action in combat zones while not engaging the enemy.
